It is all at once summer here, with intense heat and sudden thunderstorms and the constant hum of mosquitoes - and I need some summer music. You know the type - happy, carefree, relaxed... and of course, I can't think of ANYTHING. All of the music I listen to is apparently wintery, melancholy stuff.
So HELP me find some summer music for lounging around my yard and trips to the beach and avoiding wearing a bathing suit at ALL COSTS, and I'll make a playlist out of the suggestions on Sunday night.
Here's what I've come up with so far:
Halo by Beyonce. Yes, it practically scalded my fingers to type that, but who cares? The song is dreamy summer perfection.

(Bearing in mind that I don't know AT ALL what kind of music you like...)
To me, Jack Johnson is the epitome of all of that is summer, happy, carefree, relaxed. His songs are like the essence of Hawai'i put to music. Fave songs are "Breakdown" "Inaudible Melodies" "Better Together" (Admittedly his songs all begin to sound the same, so I can only listen to so much, but I love him interspersed with other stuff.)
Paul Simon makes great summer music. "Me and Julio Down by the School Yard" or "Kodachrome" - Heck Yes!
"I Don't Know" by Lisa Hannigan is super cute and chill.
If you like something a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, I like the album "Back to Me" by Kathleen Edwards.
I have been enjoying Feist, Regina Spektor and A Fine Frenzy lately. And Imogen Heap and Ben Folds can be really fun.
Phew, that's enough!
I'm going to recycle a list I left in a comment for someone else recently:
Golden, Jill Scott
Do You Realize, Flaming Lips (by association with summer more than the actual song)
As, Stevie Wonder
Listen to the Music, The Doobie Brothers
Martyr, Rusted Root
Wildflowers, Tom Petty
Float On, Modest Mouse
Yellow Sun, The Raconteurs
Cosmic Girl, Jamiroquai
Floetic, Floetry
Tropicalia, Beck
And I agree that Jack Johnson is fun, laid back summer. I just wish summer would come to NYC! Too much 60 degree weather and rain for June! Good luck with the mix!
The Script - "Before the Worst"
FFH - "One of These Days"
toby Mac - "Love Is In the House"
Bonnie Raitt - "Angel from Montgomery"
Ha-ash - "Already Home"
Erin McCarley - "Pony (It's OK)"
Lisa Hannigan - "I Don't Know"
I like kd lang's Invincible Summer album, esp. "Summerfling."
Also, Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up the Sun." Overplayed? Yes. Summery? Yes.
Also, Beach Boys. :)
Also, Indigo Girl's "Get Out the Map."
Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"
Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl"
Louis Armstrong's "On the Sunny Side of the Street"
Anything by Jimmy Buffet, just screams summer to me!
Anything Jason Mraz makes me want to hang out on a beach.
I find the golden oldies station makes me feel like it's summer. Perhaps an homage to my childhood. They were piping it in at the outdoor mall we were at yesterday and I felt like I was on a Disney channel musical montage. Then my B said, "It's like we're in a music video." That's my girl.
Well not really HANG OUT. I mean, just - ya know - sit.
Stuff that reminds me of summer is anything by Beach Bays, ABBA, and Neil Sedaka. I KNOW! What kind of freak am I!?! But that is what I grew up on. It brings pictures of my mom sunbathing in the back yard to mind. I would make her jump out of her skin by putting popsicles on her back while she baked. LOL, great fun.
For modern...? Maybe Colbie Caillat. Her stuff is nice.
I Don't Feel Like Dancin', the Scissor Sisters. Makes me HAPPY!
Blast it all, I can't get this to work. So I wrote my own post about it. Stop by and read it.
My whole playlist fits this description, and yes, Jack Johnson is included. But so is Brett Dennen, a major favorite, Tristan Prettyman, Jason Mraz, Ingrid Michaelson, Joshua Radin, Josh Ritter, Kalai, India.Arie (her song is "Summer"), Rosie Thomas, and Paulo Nuttini (New Shoes), among others. You can check out my playlist and play the songs individually to see if you like them at http://www.grannysuesnews.blogspot.com.
I LOVE my music.
=)
Oh, I don't know anything current. I'm OLD you see! ;)

I just want to study all your comments on this. I feel incredibly out of all things music as of late. But I do find that in the summer I tend toward all things nostalgic for me - The Indigo Girls are perfect for driving...
Beth - Mom Haircut

1: Van Morrison is so totally great in summer. All the stuff that's too twee for cold weather is perfect when the sun is out. CF: "Sweet Thing." summery AND melancholy! Perfect!
2: i'd skip jack johnson and go directly to Ben Harper, from whom jack johnson learned everything (good)) he knows. imho.
3: rockish for driving around: "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" by LCD Soundsystem. super fun!
4: also, did you hear the fleet foxes album? it's not poppy, exactly, but it's really beautiful. You might like it.
also, i'm always glad when you do this!! yay Beck!
"M79" by Vampire Weekend.
"Daylight" by Matt and Kim
"Summer Breeze" Jason Mraz (superior cover of 70s song)
"Fresh Feeling" by The Eels
"Adios Ayer" by Jose Padilla
Just some ideas...
Oh, and on the "Adios Ayer" suggestion, make sure it's the version from The Best of Cafe Del Mar. Other versions are kind of eh.
I love your blog. I enjoyed reading it today.
I had some time to do some blog hopping...
I always enjoy finding new blogs and new friends.
Hope you will stop by and visit me.
This month I am posting on our Disney trip plus a June giveaway.....plus a new grandson that will arrive on Tuesday....
I truly think you would like Mood Rings by Relient K.
well, it's completely and utterly cliched, but you can't beat classic Beach Boys for a summertime soundtrack
That Summer Feeling: Jonathan Richman
But really, it depends on what you're doing: driving in a car, sitting outside, at the beach. I like Little Red Corvette by Prince but only when I'm making dinner, and We Were Never Being Boring by the Pet Shop Boys, but only in the mornings on weekends when I'm drinking coffee and wishing my kids would be quiet...
Oooh! Summer! Summer music!!! I am so jealous that you are in Summer right now!
When I want to feel like it's summer, though it is dreary winter here right now, I listen to:
Josh Pyke
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwRqD4Kmiy4
In particular I really like his song The Summer and now that I think of it, it's prefect for you, the girl who has never seen the sea!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1ABbLlKTlw&feature=related
(trippy clip)
The lyrics go..."If I could bottle up the sea breeze I would take it over to your house
And pour it loose through your garden
So the hinges on your windows would rust and colour
Like the boats pulled up on the sand for the summer
And your sweet clean clothes would go stiff on the line
And there’d be sand in your pockets and nothing on your mind"
I would love to bottle up the sea breeze and send it to you, Beck!
The Beautiful Girls played their way through my summer too.

Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz are great summery suggestions too.
Enjoy your summer, you lucky thing!
Oooh! Or Corinne Bailey Rae! 'Put Your Records On'.
