For those of you who follow me - however unwisely - on Twitter, you're likely aware that the past few days have been really upsetting. For those of you who don't, here's the story in a nutshell:
1) My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their first baby in August.
2) My sister-in-law is 31 weeks pregnant this week.
3) When she developed scary pregnancy complications.
4) And ended up in the hospital.
.... which we all thought was going to lead to 5) The premature birth of my very first niece but instead looks like it's going to lead to 5) My poor sister-in-law being on bedrest for the rest of her pregnancy. And bedrest isn't fun, but I'd like to request prayers that their baby STAYS PUT for several more weeks.
So that's been keeping me glued to the phone for the past several days.
I almost bought a dog today - there was a Bichon Frise puppy for sale in the paper, so my dad and I were like "ROAD TRIP! ROAD TRIP TO BUY A PUPPY!". Good thing I've learned some moderation in my adult years, and chose instead to wait to discuss this with my husband upon his return from The Magical Place Where He Makes Puppy Money. OF course, that was incredibly stupid of me, because now after our reasonable adult discussion, I find myself agreeing that remaining in our DOGLESS STATE is the correct and adult thing to do. I should have just gone and bought the puppy and then greeted my husband at the door with the puppy and me saying "What's that, puppy? You wuv daddy? Daddy wuvs you too!".
So anyhoo. My niece needs to stay put, I need a puppy AND it's too hot out. The end.

Baby, don't come out now. If you stay inside for 8 more weeks, your mama will buy you a car when you are 16. That's a good baby.
If you want to feel better about not getting that Bichon Frise, read their wikipedia entry. Especially the part about how they are prone to warts all over their bodies. Blech.
Have been and will continue praying for your sister in law, and will pray that your husband's heart change about a puppy OR that your heart change about said puppy. :) And I am sorry it is hot--you are welcome to drive a very long way and join us at the pond where we have spent the day swimming and are now returning to in order to play with fireworks. :)
On a side note--due to my husband's severe animal allergy it is not likely for me to be tempted with puppies--on the other hand I am often very tempted to take spontaneous road trips, and am at this very moment PRAYING for the money and the perfect Toyota Sienna for our family to all show up at the same time so we CAN take a road trip.
PRONE TO WHAT? WARTS? OH BARF. URGE TO HAVE BICHON FRISE... VANISHING....
I hope the baby stays put. Prayers for everyone.
I almost bought a dog last Saturday. I camethisclose. Unfortunately, my hubby was like yours...practical, reasonable, no fun.
warts??? Gross.
Hey, I got the puppy temptation this week too! Resisted with difficulty due to same main reason (lack of puppy -sustaining money). :-)
Will pray for your SIL and niece.
Hoping all goes well for your sister in-law.
We are having the 'baby or dog' negotiations...
The "you wuv daddy" part cracked me up. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.
Scott always talks me out of way too many impulsive things. Which I guess is good, or we'd be living ins small zoo right now.
Rational and reasonable husbands are really no fun at all eh?
Praying for your SIL and your beautiful new niece!
I am glad for the update because I continue to be Twitterless.
I do, however, have a dog. You can have my dog, I'll have her shipped! No?
Prayers for that darling baby. Hopefully it will all work out and she'll make it to 36 weeks!
thinking good thoughts about your SIL and baby.
though bedrest and no puppy both sound like bad things, they are actually both very good. the baby will have more time to grow and you will not have to potty train or lose any of your shoes. trust me on this. get a grown up dog.
Bed rest boo. Warty dogs boo. But your imagined introduction of hubs to pups? My moment of sunshine (the fun kind, r/than the blazing eye searing skin scorching will sapping kind of sun currently on offer here in The South).
Oh, you and your hijinx.
that pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?
that is SO stressful. Fingers crossed and prayers going up for the little one.
I hope the baby stays put! And I hope you get your puppy, lol.
Those scares during pregnancy are ... well, scary. I hope all goes very well. I'll pray.
And we are about to become puppy foster parents I think. Through the rest of the year. It will be good practice to see if we really want another dog for 15 years. We have been dogless for 2 years now, since losing our sweet Abby. But ... we are balking at the idea of full time FOREVER having another. We'll see.
do not talk to me about hot. thank you.
prayers for your niece.
Prayers for baby and SIL.
I want a CAVALIER King Charles Spaniel. Not the toy pug nosy ones... the normal looking ones that are born to lie in the lap and adore you without warts.
Had my border collie shaved today, that was almost like getting a new dog.
Totally sending stay put vibes for your SIL.
I sooooo want a dog, but I am suppose to be content with the baby that is coming ... she is coming no matter what, I want a furry companion too!
We've been having pet discussions around here, too.
Remember that old Bill Cosby routine about having his wife swallow a ball or a crayon to keep the baby entertained? Stay put and entertained, Baby!
I will be praying for your family!
Praying that your SIL remains an incubator for several more weeks. Heh. And now all the mommas in their third trimesters want to hurt me. But I was PRAYING, y'all. You can't kill someone who is praying.
I'm totally sending that baby lazy thoughts. Don't rush, baby. Lazy, slow is goooood. Don't give your Aunty Beck a heart attack this early. Plenty of years left for that.
And I WANT A PUPPY TOO! It's a major theme to my restlessness these days. My husband also put the kibosh on it, and I too, just wish I hadn't told him.
Those dogs have very fluffy hair, and right by their booties. Soooo... you have to wipe their butts after they poo all the time. I'm just saying.
That, plus the warts. Is the urge all gone yet?
Prayers for your SIL and the sweet baby. :)
After reading your comments, I don't want a Bichon Frise. Ever. But I do really regret not getting the puppy that was offered us. Now it would be growing and chewing and being all cute and snuffly and snuggly all over the place. WAAH! I want a puppy; I'm too old for another baby now. Or rather, my babies are too old for me to start over again.
Praying for your SIL and baby!
Hope baby gets all complacent and lazy inside the warm, cozy womb. Hope SIL does not lose her mind during the 8-wk bedrest! Hope!
We've been having a puppy discussion for ages. It always ends with our being practical (have to get an "oodle" mix or Schnauzer due to my allergies--and boy, are they expensive!) and BORING. But seriously, I don't think I could handle the responsibility right now.... So, BORING, it is!
And...probably a guinea pig in about two weeks to placate our Girl. Apparently the bunny is not enough to keep her pet-happy.
I had a friend who ended up on best rest starting at 16 WEEKS! She was absolutely crazy by 30-something weeks and you know what the good news turned out to be? Stinker decided he liked it in there and she ended up having to be induced at 41 plus weeks. Hope your little niece-let sticks tight and her mother takes this as an opportunity to read a stack of awesome books you will surely be happy to provide.
Hugs for you, prayers for your family.
Oh, scary. Glad things are OK.
Prayers and good thoughts to your family.
But...dogs are awesome. Although mine eats all sorts of gross things and then throws up on my carpet. And...I had to pull an elastic band (that he had eaten) out of his ass. So, maybe that will change your mind?
Stressful stuff but told very entertainingly. I think you did the right thing to wait to be talked out of the puppy (but that's because I'm a puppy-talker-outer type) (who resisted saying "Thank heavens!" when my sister and her family found new owners for their feisty labradoodles) (also, my cousin just posted on Facebook that their dog bit her three-year-old daughter today and will need a new home. So no puppy love from me) OH WHERE WAS I? Oh yeah--bedrest doesn't sound like fun but it will be worth it if the baby stays put a while longer--I'll add my prayers that it be so.
Even God had a dog, when Gitche Manitou was creating the world he didn't creat the dog, he had a dog, (an Indian Village Dog like I have, no doubt), and when he had created a lake or a river or something like that, he would say, "Taste this my dog, and see how good it is!"

oh, 31 weeks, too, too early.
keep us posted.
have no thoughts on puppies at the moment, living here in a tiny condo with 3 boys. But, you have a yard, no? So that could be good.
Oh, I hate being out of touch. I am sorry about your SIL and praying that the baby does stay put. My dear, sweet, dog of 8 years peed in my bathroom twice this week, so I can't help you there.
Praying for your brother, his wife, and the baby.
Oh, and yeah ... don't buy a puppy. ;)
But if you just have to have one, here's an idea: beg for a BABY for a few weeks, then "capitulate" to a puppy. That might work.
But it would go against my better judgment. :)
You do need a puppy! I was talked into one last year, and despite being the one who takes almost total responsibility for the little miss, I'm so glad I gave in.
Oh, and of course, prayers for your brother and SIL!
OH, don't mention that you are on Twitter. Even my Dad is and tries to get me in, but I-don't-want-to, but following you might be a reason :-)
Sending a prayer for your SIL and the safety of the baby.
I have that "puppy-problem" with baby rabbits. There is a shop right in the middle of town who has baby rabbits in their window where they happily hop and yawn and look cute. And there I days where I just want to bring one of those home - until I remember that they get 10 YEARS OLD, need to be cleaned and fed during my vacations, too and this keeps me on earth.
Puppy money. ha.
We absolutely adore our bichon. However. The first two years I would have gladly kicked her out into the snowy curbs of the San Francisco bay area if I wasn't absolutely convinced it would send my daughter into early therapy (later therapy is a given). She is now 3.5 and just the best best best dog ever. The first year, though, was brutal. (They have you convinced they are dumb but they are, in fact, smarter than us--very discommoding.)
Sending positive thoughts that the baby is staying where it's supposed to for now... safe and snug in your SIL's tummy...
Someday on the puppy, someday...
You poor SIL! The good news is that 31 weeks is actually pretty good although I know that 38+ would be best. I hope she is comfortable and has lots of help.
I'd love a puppy but it's not in the cards fora while. Bichons are cute but my neighbor had one that jumped and barked ALL.THE.TIME which kind of soured me on their cuteness.
