Also, they're edible and quite tasty.
Dandelions are pretty awesome, too. They're cheerful and hardy and early and edible (The Girl insisted right at the start of spring that we eat a dandelion leaf salad for supper one night.) and when they go to seed, you can make wishes. What more do you want? One of these days, all of my dandelion wishes will come true and I'll wake up to a pony in my yard and the guy I had a crush on in grade seven calling me for a date. AWKWARD!
Puffballs seemed to be more common when I was a kid, although this might have been because I spent more time running around damp fields than I do now. My husband and I exchanged stories of magical school days in the rainy spring when you'd go outside at recess and the whole YARD was covered in puffballs and little kids in rainboots stomping on them, surrounded by this enormous dusty cloud.
Here's my three kite-flying last night. The giant mob of seagulls hadn't quite got there yet. Isn't that sky something? You can see the gulls in this picture - look for all of the white flecks at the top of the hill.
Hundreds of gulls, each avidly watching the kite flying through the air. One swallow bravely flew around the kite several times and then soared away, a courageous brown-winged bird disappearing into the trees.
Life is full of beautiful things - the silvery wings of the gulls, the circling arch of the sparrow, my laughing children running through the damp fields, the red kite craning into the sky, straining against the string. The end.

It sure does look and sound beautiful. Except for maybe the huge edible spores.
Never ever heard of puff balls. Perhaps they are a way-up-north kind of phenomenon.
And you sound better. It's a happy sound.
This is how I know I am a boring old adult: I cringe at the thought of children running through damp fields, as the potential for wet shoes and muddy clothes is high.
Should have read this one first, where you clearly state that puffballs are edible.
Still, I suspect stomping on them is more fun. Unless you are starving in which case -> pass the butter.
Puffballs! My favorite part of camp. They let out such a satisfying squish.
It takes a true poet to find beauty in seagulls. They just annoy the heck out of me.
I wonder if they are everywhere? Because I remember finding them all the time as a kid in Alaska, and I don't know if I've ever found one here in Ohio. Of course, I also don't run around acres and acres of undeveloped forest on a regular basis like I did back then.
Gorgeous pictures!
Yummy Dandelions. Dandelion fritters are good. And the leaves are extremely high in nutrients however quite bitter.
Good for your health but not so good for your lawn (or sinuses for that matter).
We have both dandelions and puffballs here, we also have lightening bugs which I guess not everyone does, but I didn't know that until we had friends from California visit and be shocked to find that they were real--they thought they were pretend like fairies.
i did not know you could eat those nasty puffball mushrooms. i thought they were only good for stomping.
There are puffballs in Ohio- but they like a woodsy area more than open fields! As for sea gulls and kites- that is a very magical description, born of clear skies and warming temps!
Be thankful you are still child-like at heart enough to stomp on puffballs, when you lose the urge, then you can worry if you are getting old.
I don't think we have puff balls here, dandelions by the score, but not puffballs. Now I want a puffball just to see what's it like to stomp on it.
I've never seen a puff ball, but they sound wonderful.
Glad you had fun.
No wonderful you're sounding so happy these days...Look at that beautiful sky!
And THIS is most amusing: "One of these days, all of my dandelion wishes will come true and I'll wake up to a pony in my yard and the guy I had a crush on in grade seven calling me for a date. AWKWARD!"
=)
I've never heard of puffballs before...interesting.
I wonder where that started - making wishes on dandelions? sometimes those wishes do come true :)
Oh this whole thing made me feel really light and happy
A PONY! Me too! And if my dandelion wishes come true, then maybe Tom Hooper will marry me! And strum somewhat angry and disturbing tunes on his guitar, but you know, in a romantic way.
Now I totally want to stomp on a puffball but I don't think I've ever seen one!
I had no idea puffballs were edible. Creepy! I used to love stomping on them as well.
Those are lovely pictures.
Did someone just makes a Grapes of Wrath reference? Sweeeeeeeeeet.
Love puffballs. For stomping, not for eating. I am big chicken!
I think the puffball rarity can be blamed on our cultures obsession with perfectly manicured lawns and overuse of herbicides. Okay. I blame most of today's ills on people's desire for lawns like putting greens, so maybe I am not impartial.
puff balls are not so beautiful when they are in your backyard and they get all stinky. I actually have quite a few posts about trying to get rid of the stinky spores...
You can EAT puffballs? Have you done so? How did you cook it? And how did you ever get the idea to put one of those things in your mouth?
Puffballs sound like a nightmare to me. Spores everywhere! Allergy alert! Find the benadryl and albuterol, stat! LOL. Oh, we are such fun at our house.
Puffballs are not a part of life here. I would have thought they were Canadian for dandelions, too. Maybe I should watch more "Little Bear"?
Beautiful photos.
OK, so I missed this post. i guess we have a sort of puffball here (california) But the spores are black and by the look of them I wouldn't think about putting them in my mouth.
I'll stick to dandelions. We have HUGE ones the size of tennisballs.
Gosh, Beck. I love reading your posts. They're magical.
And my wish would be as the kids are blowing the dandelions is that more would NOT grow. At least not in our grass. I know, I know. I'm SUCH a fun-killer.
sorry to break this to you, but Webster's third new international dictionary (unabridged) says that puffballs are also dandelions.
