A post that is about not much

And how was your Mother's Day?

Mother's Day doesn't loom large in my own personal canon - I know women who spend the day in a scowling funk if they're not allowed to nap for 12 solid hours, but for whatever reason, it's not terribly important to me. And that is why, MOM, I forgot to buy you a card. I'm just too large-minded! Yeah. In conclusion, I am a terrible daughter.
Yours truly, Beck.

We're all still sick. The kids are sick enough to not be at school STILL - you can actually hear the knowledge leaving their little heads! - but not too sick to be fractious and bored out of their wits. We spent the weekend - since we couldn't GO anywhere - in one of those make-work projects we do every so often, switching everyone's bedrooms around AGAIN. And so now I have a new bedroom and I'm waking up every five minutes at night disoriented and unsure of where I might actually be, or where my children are. I'm semi-hysterical with exhaustion right now, and my house is awash in trails of clutter - Happy Meal toys, lego men, little Playmobil animals, Polly Pocket's whorish little shoes - left behind by the change in bedrooms.

We're painting the girls' room - they're sharing again! - a lovely robin's egg blue, a colour so heart-rendingly pretty that when the clerk opened the paint can to show us the colour before sealing it, my heart felt oddly broken for a second. Some colours are like that - not my office's muted olive green (although it's a nice colour), but my living room's yellow, yes, the way it turns to ridiculous Maxfield Parrish gold when the sun hits it in the early evening. My whole house will eventually be shades of yellow and blue and then good luck selling it, me.

That's enough sickly ramblings for now. Do you have any ideas about things for me to write about? I'm low on "topics" right now.

Well, your colors sound absolutely lovely. I'm sorry your kids are still sick. I hope they feel better soon and can get back to school to give you a bit of a recharge before summer.

Rooms in my house are painted bright lilac purple, robin's egg blue, and red, among others, so I too will eventually need good luck to sell my house. :)

Ahhhh, topics. I am woefully low on that subject as well. I blame my spring allergies for sneezing all the ideas out of my head.

And, my husband knows that my entire house would be painted in shades of green and blue if he didn't step in and protest every now and then.

I have to tell you that I could read about your paint drying and as long as you were the one writing it I would likely end up crying.

Topic-wise? hmmmm. You already did the oatmeal one...Love stories are always fun to read. Got any of those?

If you ever sell your house, the realtor will tell you to paint it all white. S/he will tell you houses with white paint sell better. S/he may be right, but when I look at houses, I like to see colours and personality. THAT'S what attracts me to a house.
And I'm currently in love with robin's egg blue. Kitea (local IKEA knock-off) has a linen tablecloth/napkin set in that colour that I want. so. badly. Sigh.
I don't have any topics for you. Unless you'd like to write about how I haven't mailed those postcards yet so now I feel GUILT everytime I see a post office or a mail truck.

I had a lovely Mother's Day. Saturday night Josh went and got Olive Garden for dinner, which I ate comfortably at home in my pajamas. Sunday, he picked up breakfast for all of us, then we went to see Monsters-vs-Alien (regular old Special Sunday), and to my parents house for swimming and more food. And of course, I got lovely crafts from my children. KayTar claims we have to SHARE the ones she gave me, she's loathe to give up her own work. LOL.

We live in a box of crayons and I would only ever be willing to sell to someone else who loved colour.

Get better, Beck family.

I have no ideas for you. Since I stopped blogging I find my mind strangely empty...a calming-yet-slightly-worrisome phenomenon.

My Mother's Day was very nice with cards and waffles, both homemade, and my husband doing all the stuff that I am usually tasked with. It was also (mostly) about my kid. She had her two-hour Alice in Wonderland dance recital extravaganza!! But I loved watching her doing her thing on stage. Except for the part where my mom and I were chatting before the show started and she told me that she and my sister don't really like my current hair style. Unsolicited hair advice on Mother's Day? NOT cool.

You could blog about WHY you moved things around again because I love redecorating make-it-work stories. We just moved the girls in together this weekend and the boy received his new-to-him big boy bed. *sniff*

Awhile back in one of your summer posts, you mentioned activities that will help The Baby be ready for preschool. What activities, specifically?

Christine Fellows has a song in which a room gets painted Robin's egg blue. You should check her out, I think you would like her.

(I don't know how to link in comments, just google her name and it should be the first site that comes up...Something to cheer you while your family convalesces.)

Sick weekend here, too. Both kids hacking and coughing. L. had croup and required a visit to the clinic. Fun times.

Hope your kids are better soon.

I love yellow and blue. For what it's worth.

I have no suggestions for writing topics, but the great thing about you, Beck, is you make everything poetic and witty and interesting. So it doesn't matter to me what you write, as long as you write.

(No pressure or anything.)

I would like to respectfully request a rant. Anything will do. Thank you.

I hope you all feel better soon. I can't imagine tackling a project like moving rooms while you're all sick! I love the sound of the blue color. I hope Husband decides soon if we're going to continue trying to sell or just refinance, because one way or another, I need to know if I can start making THIS house a home (meaning paint the colors I want, put up my own art beyond some basics).

Topics:
Modesty/Dignity in dress for girls
New recipes
How to keep my daughter under age 2 forever (not really, but seriously, can I bottle up this sweet?)
Lilacs (because I just ran an errand at work and stopped my car on a burm, emergency flashers on, to go out and pick a sprig of it to have at my desk)

My two oldest kids spent Mother's day barfing. So. That's fun.

I feel the same way about that color!

And I WOULD have been that Mom all grumpy yesterday but ended up really having a good day despite not getting a nap. I'm over that.

I like whatever you write- especially when it's about nothing.

I think your colors sound lovely. If you ever sell you can always repaint it boring generic beige.

Move over in the sick boat and give me a seat. My throat is getting more sore by the minute. My head feels like it belongs to someone else and all I want to do is go to bed. But I have nowhere to stash the dayhome kidlets so that I can do that. So I'm just sitting here slowly melting into the couch while they trash my playroom at my feet.

I can't even think of a topic for my blog so you're outa luck asking me.

We are renovating the kitchen soon, and we are having to talk ourselves out of lime green cabinets. I totally understand the happy heartbreak that a colour can induce.

I would buy a house that was blue and yellow.

I had a nice mother's day. I posted some pictures today but I also planted quite a few perennials (and my husband dug the holes for me) and I think it looks good.

May I get your opinion on paint colors? For beige do you like the traditional beige or the new "latte" color of beige?

I remembered to call my mom at 11 last night. It wasn't Mother's day in france so I was paying attention...
I've stooped to writing about my garden gnome. Maybe I'll give him a permanent place in blog world...he seems to lead a more interesting life than I do en ce moment....look french words...
I took photos of my girls today and they yelled back that I was not to put that in my blog, so that's out for me.
So how about:
-food
-clothes...where you shop/what you like
-photo blogging, sometimes it helps me to take a photo of something, anything and then start writing about it...hence my garden gnome.

It's really hard to find a good blue, a blue that looks the way you expect it to, even in different light. Good for you for finding that blue!

Topics? Um ... how we should design our houses with their current rather than their future owners in mind?

The longer I'm a mom, the less I have vested in the day. But I did use it to justify a purchase of hand weights.

My laundry room and sewing room are both painted robin's egg blue -- and it's restful, and feminine, but also very crisp.

Wait a minute -- don't you have at least one wall painted red? Most likely in your kitchen? I do. And so does EVERY SINGLE ONE of my friends. B/c we all overdosed on Trading Spaces during our children's first year of life and were brainwashed by Paige Davis, et al.

I nominate the topic of: YOUR WEDDING! Why don't more people post about their weddings! I love wedding posts! Please. Do it for me.

Topics? I really loved your baby posts, and your craft posts, and I love your recipes and meal plans....let's see....I'm impressed that you switched around bedrooms, I would also be totally disoriented. Hope you get better soon!

Actually, another good topic would be Polly Pocket and her whorish shoes!!

You could write about how much you love and adore me. That would fill up at LEAST a week's worth of posts...

You're welcome.

Umm, how about ways to deal with buying your annuals before a forecast of five consecutive frosts?

Barb said...

For someone who has nothing to write about, you sure said a lot, Beck. I'm sorry you're all sick but what fun, switching all the rooms around in the house. I used to do that...before I got old and set in my ways. LOL

My advice? Keep writing about nothing. Your nothing is wonderful.

Karen MEG said...

Oh boy, I hope you all get well really soon. There was a breakout of 5th in our school last year, but my boy didn't get it. And YOU've got it too? Yuck!

I think it is brilliant how you change up the rooms every so often.

I have NO topics, sorry. I am going through some slow-blog-mojo myself these days.

I'm sure inspiration will come when you're feeling better...

Hannah said...

What inspired the new room shuffle? I remember it being sort of a big deal for the Girl to get her own room ...

Anyway, I can relate to the "not too sick to be bored and fractious ..." It's easy to sympathize with the poor dears when they're lying frailly in their beds. But when they're over the worst but not fully themselves? Ick.

Oh you guys! I hope you and your family get better!!!! My daughters rooms are painted a lovely lilac, and the other misty rose. Did you know Benjamin Moore's paints are so lovely to work with! I don't work for them, and I don't sell them, but I'm a huge fan!!!!
I don't know what you can write about. How about how to survive school trips? I went to one with the second grade, and I'm exhausted!!!!!

I love yellow and blue, too, which is why most of my house is also painted in those colors.

We bought our last house before it was finished and I got to pick out ONE color for all the walls to be painted. I picked yellow, and I tried hard to pick a good one. I was so nervous when I came in the first time. The painters met me at the door and drawled slowly in their deep South accents, "Well, ye got ye a yeller howse." I was imagining BIG BIRD YELLOW, oh, no.
But it was lovely. A bit much without curtains or furniture to bust it up, but I enjoyed it enough to do it again when we moved here several years later. :)

And in my opinion, you can't go wrong with a beautiful, calm blue in a bedroom. And I'm so glad the girls are together again. :) My girls have their own bedrooms but they always sleep together. They stay up too late giggling, but we let it slide most of the time. ;)

Enjoy your "extreme makeover!" :)
Sounds like fun.
