One of my cousins is a risk-taker - her idea of a really good time is to jump out of an airplane. Her brother likes to dive in shark-infested waters. And her other brother is in the military. They're practically siblings to me, but the idea of voluntarily taking risks is as foreign to me as suddenly growing gills, so I'm guessing that I'm missing out on that particularily zesty part of their genetics. I don't know how I missed it, since on the other side of me, both of my paternal grandparents were rather... I'll say adventurous. Yes. But someplace, there must have been some very cautious person, some dusty great-great-great grand and here I am. Cautious and moody, that's me.
AND TALENTED AT MAKING JELL-O: LOOK ON MY WORKS, YE MIGHTY, AND DESPAIR!
AND TALENTED AT MAKING JELL-O: LOOK ON MY WORKS, YE MIGHTY, AND DESPAIR!

Oh, YEAH. Awesome.
Actually, that was a miserable thing to make - not that decorating it was in any way tricky but THE FREAKING JELLO DID NOT SET, so I had to carefully frost the shifting liquidy mass, which was quite the task. My kids each ate several bowls (bowls were necessary, since it was a LIQUID) of the glop, so I guess it was successful from that perspective. But there you go - my one patriotic dessert of the year. Next year, I'm just going to drink straight from a bottle of maple syrup.

Loverly picture. I thought I would be the first to comment but apparently game gambling online lottery beat me to it!
Bravo for the Jello attempt. Looks perfect to me!
oooh, those spammers. They found me last week, evil evil things.
The picture is gorgeous and moody, well done.
I think making a maple leaf out of strawberries on top of Jello is pretty risky in itself.
beck you are so beautiful
Lovely Canadian flag-o-jello! We Americans can do that with our strawberries at striped attention and a fistful of blueberries and call it a celebration. We are so easily amused :)
I am a cautious one too. To a point, my mama would say, of paranoia. I don't much trust the world these days. Sad actually.
that is such a beautiful picture of you! (I'm bummed I missed the post below w/the other pictures - darn vacation!) :)
I'm not a risk-taker either, so I feel you there!
Awesome photo. Your lovely. But I'm not going to reciprocate and post a photo of myself. Even though I've just coloured my hair a lovely shade of chocolate AND caramel. Yummmm, desert-themed hair.
Our Canada cuisine was boiled hotdogs at the Legion.
The closest I get to risk taking: blogging without proof reading. I'm a wild woman.
I have this freaky overwhelming desire to never have to say "I totally saw that coming"- therefore, risk taking? not ever gonna be on my to do list.
I think making jello for patriotic holidays is risky enough. :)
Hey! We just had a combined Canada Day/Fourth of July Celebration with our Canadian friends who have lived in the US quite a while now much to their families' chagrin.
This picture is very lovely, too.
Hey, I hide behind a now-deceased cat in name and photo! Yoiks.
But i totally get the thing about being cautious in a family of less-traditionals. I am the boring one in my lot by far.
Oh yay! A photo of you. I was bummed that I missed the goods on the last post!
I love it.
Isn't that photo number 2 from the now deceased post??? I voted for that one. Great picture.
Easy for me to say, I'm Anonymous!
i think you're lovely.
Hey, you tried! And anything that tastes good is a success in my book.
At least you gave it the 'ole college try. I wouldn't even attempt to make a themed cake.
Lovely picture, Beck!
Love the picture you've chosen. You are a beauty. There's a good reason that I have an Ugly Doll as my picture of choice. He's more photogenic than I am.
If the kids ate several bowls of your "cake" then I would consider that a raving success.
Poor internet. I've plastered photos of my head all over the place and you withhold your lovely face.
And I've had my share of battles with Jello. Remind me next time that I want to make a 'rainbow jello' that I need to have my head examined.
I made the Canada Flag thing too (except with the pound cake and jell-o, which gave the jiggling mess a little more substance).
The picture you chose is lovely.
I've never made jello. Guess there's a reason for that.
Love the picture.
That is a great photo- and I love the Canada cake! I want some strawberries!!
Steph
Oh, the possibilities: vodka and syrup...only syrup breath (no one will no you even drank), or flaming syrup shots (I don't know what they light on fire), oh, or syrup and Irish Cream. For the kids, syrup and kool-aid. You weird Canadian, you. Nice picture. You look so soft.
Oooh, that's a nice picture of you, too.
And making a maple leaf out of strawberries should stay off my list of things to try, because if YOU struggle with it, the rest of us are toast!
I'm still made at you for taking down the other post so fast.
I like the one you have up though ~ what are you using it for?
Oh - and the jello? Looks delish. Who cares if it's liquidy? Whip cream (or frosting?) will save all!
Excellent usage of an Ozymandias quote.
Good choice on the photo, I quite like it.
I don't have the adventure gene either...but I always admire it in other people.
I think this angle really brings out your beautiful features than the one you use for the Kitchen posts.
You are beautiful, Beck. Your skin is so bright with a hint of rosie cheek, and eyes that match your chestnut hair.
I don't know how you could ever look in a mirror and not love what you see. :)
Lovely photo, if you can stand one more comment to that effect! And the jello looks wonderful, too.
By the way, I made your sour cream pancakes this morning and they were FABULOUS! My dad, who prides himself on having the best secret pancake recipe kept standing behind me, looking over my shoulder, and insisting that the proportions weren't right ("hmmmm..." he would say, "it seems there should be more butter") but then he pronounced them delicious in the end.
Well I'm glad to see that you're such a traditionalist. Who wants to eat a dessert made from cow hooves anyway! As for the photo debate, I have similar mis-givings but me I think the answer would be to post something from 20 years ago, but in your case, a picture of an embryo would never do.
Cheers
Beautiful Beck. The photo of you that is.
I just kept looking at your Jello and thinking, now why did she arrange the strawberries like that? It took me like 3 whole minutes for me to remember that you are Canadian. :)
That fact made the Jello much cuter.
I like the picture!--Lovely!
And a Canadian flag jello!--You continue to surprise and impress!
BEAUTIFUL!! I missed the last post and thought of asking you to email it to me, but hooray! I get to see your lovely self after all.
I love it. You are exquisite. And I love that it captures the artist in you!
Yes, you do know how to get EVEN ME to come take a look (I usually read the non-picture version on email). Love the picture. Not overly moody. Just toward the mysterious, I would say...
Oh my ... how your blog makes me laugh. I come here looking for a cup of good cheer (and I am never disappointed). : )
You are too beautiful to ever hide behind a comic-like image! I would flaunt my stuff were I you. Great picture of you...and the jello!
Your liquid jello flag is more than my family got for our Independence day.
Although I did wear a red shirt. And blue shoes with white socks. What more could anyone want?
Perfect shot.
And I know ALL ABOUT the nasty jello saga. Poor, poor jello. I can make all sorts of baked goods but jello hates me. Good thing I am not a big jello eater--my grandma was the little old lady who always brought a weird jello salad to EVERYTHING so we all kind of avoid all things jello now.
My grandma made fabulous jello molds for every occasion. The weirdest jello story I know comes from the family of one of my best friends; I have known her since I was 11. The first time I had dinner at her house, they served ungelled jello in teacups with saucers — still warm! When I asked if they had just forgotten to make the jello early enough, they said that, no, this was the way they always served it.
Maple syrup shots are very patriotic, BTW.
I love that picture of you. Gorgeous. I suspect the self-destructing post, below, contained more pictures that did, in fact, self destruct. I missed that but I trust you received glowing feedback without me. ;)
I knew there was a reason I relate to your posts so much. Cautious and moody--that's me, too.
That's what Canada is all about: recalcitrant desserts. Right?
I think your big head looks thoughtful and aristocratic.
Oh, it's the Canadian Flag!!! I honestly was wondering what the heck you did to your strawberries and then I went "Oh yeah!! Canadian!! Doh!"
I like the picture. It's the one I picked! That's why you chose it, right? Admit it. My vote holds mucho clout, I know.
I'm glad you put a pic back up. You're right - it's so not fair for you to hide. :) It's a beautiful picture, too - you have gorgeous skin - you would have fit right into Jane Austen's world.
Love the Canada dessert - but it took me a minute before the lightbulb went off - Oh, Canada. No pun intended.
Our "patriotic dessert" that people do around here is a yellow cake topped with whip cream, blueberries, and strawberries, in star and stripe formation, of course. I can't eat it. Yes, maple syrup sounds better. But you can't really beat on July 4th.
Speaking of desserts, I'm fixin' to put up a blog post with pictures of our dessert tonight which was the ultimate in summertime indulgence, I think. I feel SICK now - but it was so very worth it. :)
(By the way, "fixin' to" is customary Southern slang for "about to." It just occurred to me how that might sound a bit strange to some...)
Oh yes. I hide behind my children, who hide behind traffic cones.
We're a cautionary lot, but at least we can cook!
Boy I hate it when desserts flop, but you're right - it looked great!
You ARE going to tell us what the mystery picture is for, right? RIGHT?
As I missed the self-destructing post, I don't know what the pictures are for and I didn't see the other ones...but the one you have up is very lovely.
Excellent choice.
Nice picture! Don't worry about the jello- it's fractious and who cares anyway! Do they give Jello tests before you can have kids? Take a long deep breath and plunge into life!! You can't be as cautious as you believe since you have this blog!!! I also vote for the maple syrup...
Whoever said Jello is foolproof lied.
You look marvelous too!
Lori
Jell-o is exactly parallel to Ozymandias. Awesome.
that is a great picture!
instead of word verification i just do comment moderation--that way i don't have to post anything from spammers. :)
That cake is adorable - I'm so making one next Canada Day!
I think it's a lovely portrait. And I don't blame you for the word verification. I'd do the same.
Oh! And I just finally figured out that the jell-o creation was a FLAG! I'm so used to seeing our flag that I didn't get it. You can say it: "Ugly American."
Just don't make me sing it in a hymn.
I love this picture...of course, I couldn't compare it to the others, since I didn't see them.
I'm impressed with your Jello-flag thing. And I'm very thankful that America's flag is so easy to decorate a cake with. Sheesh...trying to make a Maple leaf in the center. That looks tough!
Can't see the Jell-O for the enormous head.
I kid, I kid.
So glad you live in Canada; otherwise, that dessert is a few blueberries short.
Plus, Canadians have great senses of humor, right?
Ever seen Super Troopers? Excellent syrup chugging going on in that movie.
Yeah, ummm, how obnoxiously beautiful you are!!!! I will never again read a post about you knocking yourself....
so what ARE the pictures for?
I like the pic, too. Love your dark hair / pale skin Black Irish kind of look.
And by the way: it would be easier if you'd move to the states because all you need to do is red strawberry stripes and then plunk down a square of blueberries in the corner. No leaves to sketch in berries.
thanks for showing me the jello!
and that picture is stunning. i wish someone would take my picture like t hat.
