Robert Zimmerman and Bedtime Prayers

As we were getting the kids ready for bed last night, the sky suddenly darkened, as though all of the light had been sucked from it at once, leaving only an inky void. It stayed dark and motionless for half an hour and then a lightening storm lit up the sky, our whole yard illuminated in shocking flashes, every tree standing tall and black.

The Girl sat on her bed and watched the storm from the window, the wet street and the crackling sky, as we said bedtime prayers together. "... and thank You, God, for nature, Amen." I finished, rather inadequately, since I find thunderstorms rather terrifying, the sky suddenly bizarre and loud and tantrum-y. And today the sky is still a sullen grey, warning that it would be wise not to make any plans.

The kids say the same bedtime prayer every night, one you might remember from your own childhood:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep....

... and here we swerve away from the traditional version, which went:
if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Going with a much gentler, rather dumbed down:
Thy love guard me through the night
And wake me with the morning light.

Which sounds much NICER to my modern ear. Yes, let's remove all mention of nasty death from
my children's ears and mouths, filling them instead with love and light, this endless pleasant life stretching ahead of us. And yet we all will die, no matter how much I bowdlerize ancient children's prayers, and perhaps there is more actual comfort in the older, blunter words - but I still don't want my children saying them.

When I was midway through my pregnancy with The Boy - I've written about this before - I hemorrhaged heavily and was told at the hospital that my baby had died within me. I went home again, curled up miserably in a chair and listened to Forever Young, the old Bob Dylan song that goes:

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true...

which has always been one of my baby songs, the songs that I would sing to my little children. Obviously, he did NOT die, and was born safe and sound and very nearly ten pounds several months later after a rather unfun but necessary period of extended bedrest and I still love that song, the lyrics summing up all of my wishes for my children, my prayer for them:

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young

Shows how ignorant I am. I didn't know Forever Young was a Dylan song. I've only heard the Rod Stewart version which I like despite hating him in general.

I remember being a little afraid of that part of the prayer as a kid. It is a little morbid.

Love the new header! So hopeful!

We swerve as well! To: "May angels watch me through the night/Until I wake with morning light."

Not that this prevents interesting bedtime discussions of death and heaven, by any means.

similar bedtime prayer over here:
---
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Let angels watch me through the night
And wake me with the morning light

I love that prayer. We use it too. My mom never used the last two lines when I was growing up, and when she recited them to me when I was older I couldn't understand why she never told me. Now I don't use the original last two lines either.
Our goes:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Angels watch me through the night
'Til I awake in mornings light.

I love your new header and color. It looks great!

I LOVE that song!
When I had my son (after 3 daughters) I loved listening to this song and thought they were the very best wishes for a son.

Jennifer said...

Wouldn't it be nice if we could stay forever young too?

Love the lyrics to that song! When the kids were little sometimes we did that prayer and sometimes we just prayed whatever. Those made for interesting bedtime conversations.

Very cute new header Beck!

Must download that song right now. Though I do love Rod Stewart singing it. His raspy voice speaks to me.

That picture at the top of your site is gorgeous. Our 1980's tri-level is sadly lacking window sills. Sigh.

Your words stir me daily. So thank you for writing. Thanks for sharing your talents.

Oh - and our prayer deviates from the classics as well. Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, Guide me safely through the night, and wake me in the morning light.
NO ONE is dying before we wake. So we don't need to talk about it. I'm with you on the love and light.

Have a great day.

I love this, beck. the gentler version sounds better on my ear, too

I have heard that version of the bedtime prayer. I like it a lot more too. The old one was almost like, "wow, hope you don't die. Now go to sleep."

Oh, and I LOVE thunderstorms.

HA HA! That's not a laugh ha ha but an understanding, ha ha. The storm last night was intense! I wish all your readers could have experienced it. The four of us over here on this side of the tracks LOVE LOVE LOVE thunderstorms. We pulled chairs up to the window and turned all the lights out. We could see neighbourhood faces pressed against their own windows - still -and watching! Beautiful post, Rebecca and very cool photo!

Lovely post and I agree. We alter the wording, too. I love how you explain it.

We don't have a traditional nighttime prayer. But I do sing this song over them:

Jesus, keeper of this life
You are my refuge, my savior, my guide
Watch over these little ones tonight
Guide their every footstep as they travel this life
And in some quiet moment, draw them to your side
So they will come to know you, Jesus
As the keeper of this life

It's my highest prayer for them.

I love these versions of the classic bedtime prayer. As a child I was never comfortable with the dying part!

Your words and stories are always lovely to read.

Oh my word.... reading all these prayers you all pray over your kids at bedtime is so awesome. *feeling moved*

You can send me any storms that you don't like... as long as they don't rain on my leaky roof. Otherwise, STORMS ROCK!!!!!!!

I never knew the words to Forever Young... what an awesome song! When/if I have kids, I will SO sing this to them!

I do love me some Bob Dylan. Such beautiful lyrics...

I have no problem talking about death on a daily basis with my kids, actually. But to state it right before they close their eyes? Um, no. Let's have happy dreams...

Becky said...

I hated that part of the prayer when I was little. I think it scared me much more than it comforted me. But since my mama did not say prayers with me (perhaps my aunt taught me the prayer) I never found a better version.

Hey ... LOVE the header.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Boats said...

That original version is rather morbid. Not the kind of thing that induces "sweet dreams." I once knew a woman who would not allow her children to sing "Ring around the Rosie" because it apparently was written about Roseola and the many deaths in children it once caused. I would like to know WHO MAKES UP THESE CRAZY THINGS FOR CHILDREN?!?!?

We are terrified of thunder storms over here, too. Or at least half of us are.

I used to say the "if I should die" version of your bedtime prayer when I was young. I much prefer your version.

Pieces said...

I adore thunder storms--probably because we don't get them often and they aren't very fierce when we do.

I love the photos!

nomotherearth said...

I always thought that line in the prayer was unnecessarily dire and scary.

McSwain said...

Hey, I didn't know that was a Dylan song, either. Thanks for the education. And I really love this post.

Lovely post, and a great new banner picture, too.

Good old Bob. One of Bean's and my favorites to dance to around here is Tangled Up in Blue covered by the Indigo Girls. SO GREAT!

Anyway, a beautiful post as always. I used to love storms until I became a homeowner (scared of damage) and a mother (don't like my baby being terrorized). And yeah, forever young. And innocent. And safe, please.

Sigh.

I am so glad winter has broken! Hooray!

I remember that original Lord's prayer striking me with a terrible fear when I was younger. And I'd lie awake at night in the dark certain I would die in my sleep.

Why do they teach kids that version, anyway?

Julie Julie Bo Boolie said...

They had this prayer bear out when I was pg with Sarah that said that prayer in the creepiest tinny voice. TOTALLY freaked me out.

Your version is nice.. but I still wouldn't want to hear it coming out of a stuffed bear's voice box ;)

Amanda said...

May you never stop writing, you sweet soul, you.

two things:

1: the death thing is interesting, right? I'm right with you, in being much more comfortable with the modern versions and also very aware how new and weird it is that we feel like we can indulge ourselves with this buffer against death. that is such a NEW THING in the history of the world.

2: A friend of my mom's read the lyrics to forever young at Elliot's blessing. so moving. her own son had recently graduated from college, and on the ipod she gave him as a gift, she included forever young as the only song, which is such a brave and great thing to say to your 21 year old boy.

"may you always do for others, and let others do for you."

the new header is so cute! definitely like the alternate version of the prayer...i was taught the scary one! :)

Well, crap, now ** I'm ** crying. Ohhhhhh.

Alpha DogMa said...

Okay, is this the same Forever Young sung by Alphaville? No. It can't be. Because the Alphaville song (which was my grad song) is not nearly as poetic if memory serves.

I love that Bob Dylan song and I love thunderstorms.

Barb said...

I changed the words to that little bedtime prayer too, Beck, for the same reason.

Boy, I LOVE your new header. I just love that photo.

Tracy said...

I didn't know Forever Young was Bob Dylan either!

Sarah said...

love it...we duck and dodge the end of that prayer as well. don't you wish we really could keep them forever young...on the good days! :)

Yes, those old lyrics seem to have been replaced every which way I look. The LG has two animals that say prayers and each one has a 'modernized' version. We haven't decided which to teach her yet.

I too, am TERRIFIED of thunder storms. Always have been...mostly, I'm deathly afraid of the possibility of a tornado. Frequent nightmares abound.

I like your new picture. The animals looks like wish to escape!

crazymumma said...

that is a nice prayer.

may they just grow with light in their eyes. safe and loved.

Kayla has a bear that when you press its tummy plays the 2nd version of that prayer...I always thought it was much more nice sounding as well!

First of all, I knew it was Bob Dylan/Robert Zimmerman. Finally, all these years of torture being married to his biggest fan pay off ;) But I love that song, even with his creaky voice. (ssshhh...I actually like him a fair amount myself, but don't tell Donn. And I HATE his harmonica and also certain particular endless songs of his)
Second, I love the new header too. And the picture of the children running through the thawing fields.
And I LOVE thunderstorms! Lucky you!

Sus said...

Okay I am totally going to I-Tunes right now and downloading this song in Dylan's voice instead of Rod Stewart's and memorizing it to sing to my kids.
PS. We do the same thing to Now I lay me. :)

We say our "PEARS" every night (when I remember) - just saying a hebrew blessing, giving thanks for the day, and blessing all our loved ones, the Earth and the world.... Monkey loves it....

I've always remembered the details of your/his amazing story...

I like your new verse to the prayer. I can specifically remember being freaked out by the original when I was a child. It was like a constant reminder each night that it might be my last. Sometimes I think our choice to "dumb things down" is more than our newfound sensitivities. It really scared me.

"and thank you for nature" I love thunderstorms.

yes. Just, yes.

oooh.. i love thunderstorms. the power and majesty and excitement of them. fantastic.

My mom scoffed at me for changing the bedtime prayer!

I even changed the "Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" song to "perhaps she'll cry".

Jennifer said...

I had not heard that story before, about The Boy. Your life has had its share of dramatic moments, Beck.
What I'm longing to hear is the story where they told you, "oh, sorry - he's NOT dead, after all..." Cannot IMAGINE.

But I'm happy right along with you that he's with us all now.

Guinevere Meadow said...

That must have been horrifying for you!!

I like your version of that prayer.

LEstes65 said...

I like your version better. Sure we all die. But do we have to root our children in fear in stead of love?

Brava for you. Brava.
