I got some fresh words for ya

It's Chinese New Year today, which means that I'm going to have my yearly discovery that I'm not very good at making egg rolls. I'm also planning on discovering the same thing about wontons later on, too. It's a day of discovery, a voyage through my ineptness! Should be fun.

Should you not want to spend your evening swearing in the kitchen, there are several very easy recipes up at my food blog right now - the EXTREMELY EASY lentil-spinach soup that I made last night, which my kids loved so much that they each had about three bowls. I would have taken a photo, but like very many very good foods, it's more tasty then photogenic. We also made cupcakes yesterday afternoon because it's my mother-in-law's birthday today (she's reading this now! Happy birthday!), so that recipe is up too. I would have taken a photo of them but I was too busy stuffing my face as fast as I could. Oh, and The Girl very shyly asked me to write down her recipe for her favorite subs as well as a handy tip for sneaking more spinach into your sandwiches. If you could comment on that one, she would really be happy.

To clear up what I'm not eating for lent: fast food. pop. chips. candy. (apparently cupcakes are not on the list. Hey, they're full of WHOLESOME INGREDIENTS! Buttermilk! Eggs! Energy-giving sugar!) Which doesn't sound like an adult's list of vices, now that I'm listing them. I felt like collapsing on the floor yesterday afternoon and crying out faintly for Diet Coke, but refrained from doing so because I have a will of iron.

I keep having these sudden unplanned waves of nausea today. I opened the breadbox and the smell of the bread made me run gagging from the room, which was a bit unexpected. There's a virus making the rounds in town and it's likely that. There's the other possibility, which caused my husband to say on the phone this morning "That's all right. I don't need sleep to live." That's the spirit!

Here are two BRAND NEW blogs that I've been enjoying recently - President of Her Book Club, with a very interesting post about Lent today, and A Mama On A Mission, written by Susan who I think might be my long-lost twin. Maybe. You should check them out and say hi - they're both dandy.

I just checked the temperature - it's -18 outside (-0.3, my American friends) but the weather site cheerfully informed me that it "feels like -35" ("-31", my States-living compadres.), or as I like to call it "TOO FREAKING COLD TO GO OUTSIDE." Good GRIEF, why do I LIVE here?

We won't be doing this today.

HUH? Why are you teasing us like that? Do I smell a baby in the air? Or uterus? I know you have been talking about how your ovaries have been aching. ?????
Ya big tease.
My mom has this completely fabulous way of making ANY food healthy. Cake? Flour, eggs, milk. Pizza? Cheese, meant, tomatoes. Everything is healthy in her mind. I love it. :)

That is absurdly cold.

Going without Diet Coke? That is brutal.

I am inspired to do something for the Chinese New Year now. I have today off, so maybe I'll try my hand at the egg rolls.

Off to check the blogs you mentioned.

Oh, that will of iron.

Dies iron have frosting? How about sweet, sweet carbonation?

Wow, that is seriously cold. Skin-shattering cold.

I'm with Kathryn, wondering about the symptoms of that "virus". Care to elaborate???

I'm off to check out your recipes...including the girl's subs. :)

You always have the freshest words!

I "snuck" spinach and mushrooms into my pizza last night, only it was just MY pizza and not everyone else's so I did not have to disguise it. They got pepper(gag!)roni.

I'm heading over to say "hey" (I'm from the south) to your new bloggettes and I'll check out The Girl's recipe. Extra spinach is the ticket!!

It is inhumane to deprive your body of diet coke! Didn't you get the most up-to-date food pyramid? Diet coke has it's own level:)

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

yeah, why DO you live there?

I feel like hibernating when it hits 32 here in the morning (0 to my Canadian friend) - I can't imagine how you will yourself out of your house EVER.

here's hoping that your nausea brings whatever is good news to YOU. :)

That's the spirit, indeed!

"That's the spirit" hehehehehe I say that to my husband ALL the time.

Oh poo Lent. I need to start that thank you for your reminders.

Although not Chinese per say I make a wicked California Roll and Rice bags (Japanese things made out of rice, duh and a rice curd outer layer thingy that feels gross, comes in a can full of weird syruppy liquid but taste so good!) I made sure that I could prepare the TWO things J likes that are from his culture ... It is like the only off the wall not spaghetti thing I can claim fame for.

Hmmm, more spinach?

Take one box of Trader Jo Brownie mix a cup of yoghourt and a 10 oz frozen packet of spinach.

Thaw spinach.

Put everything in the Magimix.....Cuisinart and whiz until the spinach is in tiny flecks.

Bake. Once cool cut into ten pieces. Makes for a very moist Brownie but you can't taste the spinach.

Each one that eat means that they also eat 1 oz of spinach.

Believe me! It's a keeper.
Cheers

What a cute little kiddo!!!

I haven't even attempted making Chinese food. Our local Chinese place has the best crab rangoons ever, so why bother?

You Canadians must be so thick skinned to handle that weather. We wusses to your south wouldn't last a day in those temps! Thanks for posting more recipes and enjoy your voyage of ineptitude as much as that is possible. Did you stash any cupcakes yesterday that could get through the trip?

WOW! I feel famous now!! You're the GREATEST!!

I was looking for lentil soup recipes. THANK YOU! I hope your ovaries will have no more need to ache ;).

Mama on a Mission types in CAPS like you do. Perhaps you are twins...

I made cupcakes yesterday for Elyse's birthday. It was your chocolate sour cream cake recipe, but in cupcake form. And I iced them with caramel icing. Delish.

Have a good day.

Susanne said...

Was that a cleverly disguised way of making an announcement? Now my "I need to know" feelers are up in the air.

Your lentil soup recipe sounds fantastic. We love spinach around here so I'm making your recipe next time I make lentil soup.

I could make it without the pop but oh, the chips. I don't eat them too often but tell me I can't have them and then I want them everyday!

So????? Are you going to test or what??? Oh, the suspense!

kristi said...

Wow, it is cold there, huh?

BubTar wore shorts yesterday and spent time on the trampoline. It is MUCH warmer here, evidently.

And that Baby! She just keeps growing up, doesn't she?

See, you amaze me, because if I was doing Lent, I would have only picked one of those items...and it probably would have been my least favorite. I have no willpower. None.

Look at those pooched-out cheeks in the baby!

My parents are coming this weekend for a late birthday celebration for T. I will make those cupcakes--they are making me drool as I type.

Heather said...

I had those symptoms two weeks ago, sadly with no good results--off to the doctor again to make sure everything is okay and find out why my hormones are so weird.

BTW--that is COLD. We had a cold snap here though it is 32 degrees american. :)

Well now THAT makes me feel better about our 'balmy' -21C today. Ugh! Thanks for the heads-up on those blogs though they may have to wait until naptime - oh - which is NOW! Woohoo!
Best wishes on your Lenten fast.

nomotherearth said...

If it is the OTHER news, then you should SO eat junk food. Forget Lent! Lent who??

I won't complain about our rain today. I won't complain about our rain today.

I couldn't take that kind of cold. You are one tough mama.

Speaking of long lost twins, I saw The Baby's twin yesterday. The first thing I thought was, Oh! I wish I had my camera! followed quickly by Oh! It's weird to take pictures of strangers children to pass around the internet! Anyway, thought you would like to know there is a little look alike down here, with the same expressions on her face and everything.

No iron will here. Wah I am sick today with a fever of about a 105 degrees. I hid under the blankets sweating and shivering.

It is now down a bit, but I feel like I have been a hit by a truck.

The fever is down a bit though now, but I still so clammy.

That soup looks great and I love lentils, might be all I can muster for dinner tonight.

When will you take the test????? Dying over here....

Eat some noodles for long life!

Happy Chinese New Year!!!!!

Aww shucks, Beck! You made my day!! I guess I'd better quit reading other people's blogs and go write something for mine now!
And that Baby is just the cutest thing ever!
PS- Hope the nausea isn't a virus- or is a virus- whatever you want it to be! :-)

Tracey said...

Ahem. You did NOT just drop a baby reference and then tra-la-la skip away from it, did you?

And you win with the cold award. You get the trophy and I don't ever want the privilege of earning it....

Brenda said...

hmmmm, hope you have a good outcome related to your nausea! and any plans on doing some meatless stuff for lent? i could use some besides ravioli and tuna quesadillas (barf).

Okay, I totally need to make a mental note to never read your blog when I'm hungry. I'm off to pick through my emergency rations in my desk now...

No Diet Coke? No candy? There's no way I'd survive. I evidently don't have a will of iron.

And your husband is too funny.

I think Ilsa would cry if I told her to eat her lentil-spinich soup. Where have I gone wrong?

Cupcakes aren't junk food. They are treats. Which it sounds like you might need! Oh my!

Good luck with the eggrolls!

Barb said...

Clearly, you live there so The Baby can look as adorable as she does in that photo. That's now my new favorite, EVER!

I've never found the courage to make egg rolls. Every recipe I've ever come across just scares me. I think I need to remedy that. How hard can it be? And I truly love egg rolls.

Your hubby is too funny. Who needs sleep? How wonderful would that be?

Jennifer Partin said...

Sometimes I ask myself the same question! Why do I live in Japan where there are no dryers and central heat? Ugh! :)

I'm giving up Starbucks for Lent.

I'm going to your recipe site to check it out!

And yum---I love eggrolls. We make homemade gyoza here. (pot stickers, I think Americans call it)

Willing to share some of that will of iron?

Mimi said...

Do you want me to moan faintly for Diet Coke on your behalf? And up north aren't you suppose to moan faintly for Diet Pepsi, actually?

And The Baby kills me. She looks like Tony Soprano in Easter egg colours and a jester hat. Too much.

I hope whatever is ailing your GI tract leaves soon. Mine stuck around for about a month. I'm still waiting for some of the doc tests to come back.

And if there is a new Baby V2.0 on the way, Lynette is an awesome girl's name....I'm just sayin'...

No Diet Coke? Hard core.

I don't know which would be the hardest to give up, diet coke or coffee?

Bread is a totally weird smell to gag at. I mean, it is, after all, the bread of LIFE. Coffee. That is a smell to gag at. When you're pregnant.

Your husband is such a great mixture of humor and sentiment. I hope he's as fabulous to live with as he sounds.

NotSoSage said...

hehe. Joe says that every day. Well not so much, "Why do I live here?" But "Why did anyone come here, and choose to stay?"

Cupcakes are totally not junk food.

yeah is this other possibility a potential baby in the making?!
