Hey!

I just accientally hit publish and I currently have a post up that just says "Hey!". Well, at least it's cheerful. This is my 450th post at this blog, which is a bit startling to think about. I have SO MUCH TO SAY, apparently.

Here's how to roast brussel sprouts - turn your oven on to 350. Halve your brussel sprouts and cut the little nubby ends off. Toss them with some olive oil, some vinegar (this would be a good place to use fancy vinegar) and some salt and pepper. I often think some nutmeg might be good at this juncture, but I've never gone so far as to add it. Spread them out on a baking sheet and pop them into the oven for 25 minutes or so.

They're NICE roasted - the bitterness mellows and they take on a gentle, nutty flavour. If you truly loathe brussel sprouts, this probably won't help, but I enjoy the rank vegetables and think that brussel sprouts look like cute little Barbie cabbages. So Barbie can make some coleslaw her her next hot tub party, you see.

Tonight's supper is going to be some vegetable-lentil soup from the crockpot. Barbie is probably going to be too hungover to eat, AGAIN. That Barbie.

Brussels sprouts are also good if you toss them with some Dijon mustard before you roast them. I quarter mine to get the most surface area for yummy browning.

Tracy said...

So, do you start with FRESH brussel sprouts? I can't think frozen would work too well.

Barbie cabbages made me laugh out loud. We love brussels sprouts, well all of us except my oldest. I'm making hubby's favorite dish for valentines which has brussel sprouts in it. When I roast mine I toss it with italian seasoning too.

I don't know if I can make that. I don't do cooked veggies. Blahhhhhh. Maybe I'll put a clothespin on my nose and make them for the boys. Blech. What I won't do for those stinking boys.

I LOVE brussel sprouts! I'm going to try roasting them! Yum!

I saw a pbs chef make brussel sprouts an interesting way too. She flaked them (um, you know, cut the little core out and separated all the little leaves) and then blanched them a bit. I can't remember what seasoning was, but it looked good and she said they weren't bitter at all.

Like the barbie picture...

Come to think of it, I can't say as I've had brussel sprouts before. Maybe I'll try them roasted as you suggest.

Barbie cabbages? I totally see it.

Beck said...

Tracy, I've never even seen frozen brussel sprouts! Yes, this is from fresh.

I think Barbie's cabbage is rotten.

I'm not a big fan of the brussel sprout, although roasted anything is popular with me. Still, I think I'll pass.

I'm making lentil soup tonight too! Wondertwin powers activate....

Kathryn said...

We love brussel sprouts...I guess we are weird that way. I've never roasted them so I'll being trying that recipe very soon!
Barbie really needs to rethink the dimensions of her hot tub, coleslaw is the least of her worries.

That darned Barbie needs to slow down a bit.

OHMYGOSH. Barbie cabbages. I've thought that myself but never heard anyone else say it. And with supporting graphics! You're a gem, Beck. What a hoot. Happy 450th, too. You don't look a day over 449.

hee hee hee.

Oh yes, and that sounds easy. And tasty. I might could eat a trunkload of those, actually, but WHEW! Hello, elephants under my chair!

Barbie cabbages. You just made my day :o)

I was traumatized by the taste of Brussels sprouts as a child and although I love almost any vegetable (especially roasted) I just can't bring myself to make them.

My name is Alison and I discriminate against innocent sprouts.

anna said...

If that lentil soup turns out well, will you please share that with us? I am desperate for anything that I can cook in a crockpot - as long ss it doesn't involve gross, canned ingredients.

Kyla said...

That Barbie, indeed. LOL.

Rima said...

Ha! I accidentally hit publish on a garbage post a few weeks ago, too, but mine was a little more incriminating than yours!

I roast brussel sprouts that way all the time (haven't tried nutmeg either, though) and I agree they are de-lish. It's the only way I'll eat them.

Chantal said...

Congrats, 450 that is amazing.

Heather said...

I have always felt the same way about Brussels sprouts and I will definitely be trying the recipe. My daughter and I are the only ones who will eat them. Though occasionally I have refused them to anyone else, which makes EVERYONE insist on having some. :)

I'm the only one around here who likes brussel sprouts so I don't often go to the trouble of making them just for myself. I want your crockpot recipe for vegetable lentil soup. Yum.

Barbie cabbages - you crack me up Beck.

I love roasted vegetables; we often have them when we cook fish.

And, providing they're hot and come with a little butter, i've always rather liked brussel sprouts.

Sarah said...

Brussel sprouts eh? I'd have never thought to roast them, I'm still not sure I'd eat them at any time but Christmas.

Congratulations on 450 posts, I love your blog.

Oh shiot. I was all revved up from reading Kyla's insurance update and you got me with the Barbie imagery. She's one heck of a party girl, I bet that hot tub could use a good cleaning!

Cyndi said...

I have only had them once and I didn't really like them. I will try this, maybe. I like both cabbage and broccoli so maybe I should give it another shot. Happy 450th post.

Jennifer said...

Hey! back at you.

Er, wait...

Wrong post. ;)

Brussel sprouts are not my thing. Unless someone else is doing the cooking. In which case, I'll eat pretty much anything.

Every now and then I gorge on Brussels -- then don't touch them for another year. Not sure why. I'm getting a hankering for them now ... I'll try the roasting recipe and maybe eat them more than once a year.

Jenifer said...

Barbie cabbages...that made me smile.

Omaha Mama said...

I really like brussel sprouts! And enjoy them in a cheese sauce. Cheese really fixes most veggies, yes?

Hey! Congrats on hitting 450, that's big!

Mad Hatter said...

Mmmmm, brussels sprouts. Love 'em. I make a delightful brussels sprouts and chestnut pie at Christmas. Very festive.

450 posts, eh? You trump me in post #'s but I'll bet you I've got you pinned to the mat when it comes to word count. I think I need an editor.

Lisa Milton said...

I always wondered about that Barbie...

I just bought some brussel sprouts and I was wondering how I could make them to convince the troops they are mmmm, good.

You saved the day.

Jenni said...

I love brussel sprouts, but unfortunately, my husband had a childhood experience which involved one coming out his nose.

I am banned from cooking them.

Barbie's "coleslaw" looks a little more like a bucket of tar...but okay.

My youngest loved brussel sprouts. He called them "little cabbage heads!"

how about some garlic as well on those sprouts....mmmmmm.

And barbie! drink one water for each wine. silly girl....

I'm skeptical of brussel sprouts. . . but I learned to like asparagus so I should give it a whirl.

I absolutely LOVE brussel sprouts! I wish my girls did, though!

And....HEY! right back at ya'! LOL

Angeline said...

Brussels sprouts, hmmmm....wonder how they taste? I like bean sprouts though, are they any where near?

Aliki2006 said...

Gosh, I haven't made brussels sprouts in AGES, and just might have to try again. T.'s favorite book now is the Frankliln story about how he hid his brussel sprounts at dinnertime in his blanket because he hated brussles sprouts and then they began to smell...

CAQuincy said...

Must try this. Hubby loves brussels.

BUT--can you post that lentil-vegetable recipe, too? I'm always looking for new, EASY vegetarian fare...!

Or you can just send it to caquincy at yahoo.com

Please?

niobe said...

What Caquincy said. I like brussels sprouts, but I looove lentil soup.

That Barbie, always organizing 'slaw exchanges just so she can get drunk in the afternoon.

kittenpie said...

I should suggest this to Misterpie, our resident cook. I LOVE Brussel Sprouts. In university, some of my roommates used to tell me I didn't have to eat them because we had no mommies in the house - they just didn't get that I LIKED them. Weirdos.

Barrie said...

I love brussels sprouts and Barbie. Although I don't think I ever thought of the two of them together before.... :)

Alpha DogMa said...

Barbie cabbages, huh? Do you enjoy miniature sized things because they let your pretend -- if for only a minute -- that you are a giant? I love my mini muffin tin for this very reason. And those little liquor bottles you get in the minibars in hotel rooms are so much fun!

Whole brussels tossed with olive oil and coarse sea salt is also excellent. Same directions. YUM!
