Keeping The Monsters Happy

I sort of truly hate it when I assume the mantel of Knowledgeable Motherhood, since I'm somewhat gormless in real life and right now my kids are keeping busy by watching Rolie Polie Olie. But whatever: here's a list of things to do with kids during the summer, especially older toddler-preschool aged kids, since I've always found that keeping them happy during summer days can be a bit trickier. So here you go - my big list of ideas:
1. Cut out paper dolls.
2. If it's raining outside, have the kids really quickly scribble with some watercolours on paper and then dash the paper outside to be rained on. Afterwards, you can see what the rain did to your paintings.
3. Make homemade popsicles.
4. Very little kids can be amused for ages with a sheet of dollar store stickers and a piece of construction paper.
5. Make potato prints - very, very fun.
6. Save your grocery store fliers and let the kids cut out the food pictures to make collages. "Healthy food" is a big one at our house; slightly older kids can do four food group collages.
7. Fingerpainting is lots of fun outside and making your own fingerpaint will make you feel like a genius.
8. Make a little puddle of paint on a big piece of paper and let your little guy drive his little cars through the paint to make attractive car-tire paintings.
9. Line a shoebox with a piece of paper and dip some marbles in paint. Plunk them in the box, put the lid on and twirl everything around.
10. Make an on-going little car city from well-rinsed out milk cartons (covered in construction paper and decorated) and boxes.
11. Read Blueberries for Sal and make blueberry muffins.
12. String Cheerios or Froot Loops on string licorice to make lovely, lovely jewelry.
13. Make blanket forts. You can also make them outside on the clothesline.
14. Make fairy houses.
15. Make a batch of cupcakes. When they're cool, give the kids several bowls of icing in different colours and some tubes of icing for piping, and lots of different bowls of candy for decorating. We do this about once a summer and it's always a huge hit, as you may imagine.
16. Fill the old baby tub with water and see what floats and what sinks.
17. Make ice blocks (old diaper wipe boxes are great molds). Add food colouring and small plastic toys and coins. You can put the ice blocks in the wading pool or if you make enough of them, they can build with them.
18. Fill up the old baby tub (again!) and bath all the dolls. Wash their clothes and hang them on the porch to dry.
19. Or have a little car wash.
20. Give the kids a bucket of water and clean house painting brushes and let them paint the car, the house or the fence.
21. Get a giant fridge box and let it hang out inside for a while. The kids can haul pillows and books inside for a lovely playhouse (especially if you cut out doors and windows) or you can get energetic and make it into a spaceship. My husband crafted one into a pirate ship once, but he's extra crafty.
22. Make paper plate masks.
23. Teach them how to make paper fans and then have them fan you while you loll about.
24. Make a bracelet from a loop of construction paper and put double sided tape on the outside. Then when you go for a walk, you and your child can look for treasures to decorate their bracelet.
25. Make a tricycle obstacle course.
26. A bunch of playdough, some cookie cutters, a plastic rolling pin and some paper lunch bags = their very own bakery.
27. Get some felt and make attractive doll (or stuffed animal or action figure) clothing. Vests are always stylish, and there's nothing more timeless than a kicky poncho.

What do YOU do to keep little kids busy in the summer?

You are seriously a genius.

Errrr, my major 'keep toddler busy' strategy is, ummm, give her an empty yogurt container and a spoon and watch her try to pretend feed herself.

Oh dear. I should probably print out your list ... ;-)

We just made popsicles! (Because the smoothie came out a little too thick.)

Yesterday was froot loop necklaces.

I'm so glad your list is so long, because there is a lot of fighting and it's so hot outside.

As much as the school-year activities cost (gymnastics & other lessons you must pay for), summer can be even more expensive if you don't have an arsenal of at home activities.

OK, gotta go catch 'em being good. Thanks!

Look at all this stuff! Now I can go and do cool things with my kiddo. Just as soon as I can pick my M&M filled bottom half off the couch like the bad slothful mom that I am today.

At first I thought it said "make blanket farts..." and I was wondering how the heck you do that, until I saw the part about the clothesline.

Wow - you are super mom. Truly.

I feel so suddenly boring. I will do my best to do even ONE thing from your list!

We do spend a lot of time outside. The sand table/kiddie pool combo is a big hit. Pouring water in the sand, seeing what it does. Driving through the "beach" with trucks and cars. Sprinkler hitting the slide is our "water park". Big fun.

I love these! We do many of them, although we haven't tried paper dolls and I remembered, when reading your post, how my sister and I loved to make paper dolls.

We like "nature walks"--go for an aimless walk armed with a basket or bag and collect things along the way.

I'm doing a few of these with kids at the library this summer. And we have cheerios necklaces at home just strung on gimp for reusing.

But I loooove the watercolour one! Totally cool.

Can I stay over at your house for the summer? This sounds like SO much fun.

Ever thought of doing sock puppets? Not much work, but great for playing for hours. I found some here http://www.daniellesplace.com/HTML/puppets.html which are quite artistic. It does not take so much work to do much simpler ones. For kids the eyes and mouth and maybe some ears are absolutely enough.

If you do some, will you post a photo :-) ? I have not been doing sock puppets for ages.

Crafts are a bit of a challenge at my house since (a) it has to be something which requires no instructions or assistance whatsoever (since both drive Bub into a frenzy of rage) and (b) I suck at thinking of crafty ideas.

But we did manage to put a morning in without leaving the house today by (a) filling up the wading pool and (b) unearthing two plastic bead necklaces I think maybe I got in Las Vegas. The latter was an enormous hit - good for a full hour of entertainment.

You are one very cool mom. I feel sorry for my child. He has been home two days sick and I am already out of activities for us to do.

This are great! Wish I had something to add.

Great list Beck. I do a lot of those with the dayhome children but you've listed some I haven't tried yet.

If you have a clothes line outside you can hang large sheets of newsprint (rollends are usually free or very, very cheap at the local newspaper) then give them spritz bottle filled with watered down tempra paints. Let them have at it.

paint rocks

make your own kites and run with them

sidewalk chalk

give them a package of the clear plastic disposable cups from a warehouse store and see what they can build. And knock down. And build again.

let them help in the garden while they still think it's fun and not work

nature walks with little buckets and let them collect leaves, twigs, etc and when you get back they can glue it on construction paper or make a mobile.

Great ideas, Beck!! I will try them out!!

I am feeling very uncreative. When we get bored, I get the Boy to help with household chores like laundry and making the bed. Gee whiz it's fun to live in my house!

You brought back some memories of the things my sister and I did to amuse ourselves so very long ago. I particularly liked the blanket fort. We set up our card table and then lined up several TV trays leading up to the table in order to create a tunnel. Then we probably used every sheet and blanket in the house to cover the whole thing!

Can I send the May Queen to Camp Beck? We've been doing a "summer fun box" where I put in little slips of paper that have a craft/game/activity on them and everyday after lunch we draw one and do it. You have given me lots of ideas to put in the box. Some things we have done so far include cookie baking, paint fireworks (water down paint and drip it on paper, blow on it through a straw), picture collages, "pick a present" (stuff I've picked up at garage sales - she picked a present with a new game in it, so that has been hours of entertainment!) I have to confess that a lot of my ideas come from Family Fun magazine (I think some of yours do, too!) i do have to tell you, though, that I thought for sure that the belly button puppets (you know, make a face using your belly button for a mouth) would be a riot, but MQ only looked at me like I was crazy, and wouldn't do it herself. Alas.

Painted Maypole - You are SO right about Family Fun magazine! I've subscribed to it non-stop since I was PREGNANT WITH THE GIRL.
And what are my kids doing right now for laffs? They are washing the dishes. Jolly!

What a terrific list?

Would you care for a few more kids?

For older kids Mod-Podge is fun.

Have you ever turned your house into a minature golf course? That's alot of fun. (does require quite a bit of clear up work though.

How about pitching a tent indoors?

Stamping and decorating cards etc. is fun.

GREAT list! I can hardly wait to try some of these!

I love Family Fun too! I try to do fun things, but am always grateful for suggestions.

We use our doll baby bathtubs for lots of things, dolls, Barbies, Polly Pockets, washing plastic dishes, etc.

We also love to play restaurant, we set up a table and tablecloth. My
6 year old writes down the order and the two girls work together to get the order ready. This is fun and whiles away an hour at least.

I can't think of anything of else right now, but if I do I'll come back.

great suggestions! and I'm supposed to add to that?! :) I can think of "bean box" - Kayla enjoys this a lot - she can spend an hour playing with beans just scooping, pouring, dumping etc.

You are my hero. AGAIN.

Blanket forts are huge in my house. This of course AFTER every relative bought my boys cool tents. They prefer the forts.

Home-made lemonade with an old citrus press. They feel very important, pressing all those lemons.

I do home made popsicles, too. Often with the afore mentioned lemonade and some blended fruit.

I like to buy them games from my childhood. Yesterday, we got Kerplunk! I never had it as a kid and now I can play it with my kids.

Lincoln Logs or Tinker Toys or Kinex or anything like that. Go nuts.

Get a small piece of unfinished furniture for them to paint. I mean, anything. It could be a knob and they're thrilled. Just make sure you can find a place in their room for it. Little foot stools are always good.

Them's the ones that come to mind.

I think I want to come play at your house. I remember once putting a couple of pieces of scotch tape on my one year old's fingers while I was cooking supper. That kept her busy for awhile. I think you said that you did that once, too.

Great suggestions! I'm printing this out and hanging it on my fridge! I also remember making paper dolls with my sister when we were somewhere around 8-10---we'd make the clothes (even cutting out little tabs on them) and the houses. We'd rarely play with them though; the fun was in the making.

My kids love to collect sea shells and rocks, so they have a little 'rock garden' in our mulch out front; everywhere we go, we look for more rocks and shells. I also 'let' them clean out our plastic sandbox by filling it with soapy water, giving them sponges, and letting them scrub away.

Set up a tent in the lounge room, give 'em a couple of saucepans and plates, torch, etc and let them 'camp'. If you're feeling brave you can provide blankets and pillows and let them sleep the night in there too.

When your kids are a wee bit older (like mine), pitch the tent outside and let them camp and sleep in the backyard. Mine love this.

oooh, good suggestions. when me and my sister were little, we had a very beloved appliance box/clubhouse that we dubbed 'Bambi.' Very exclusive.

Wow. I'll have to print that out and hang it on the fridge.

You mean just saying, "Go out to play and leave me alone at the computer." doesn't work? Not even when I tell him to maybe draw a picture?

Drat.

I really like nomo's suggestions. Perfectly do-able.
